Cultivate a Positive Attitude

A positive attitude is possibly the most important thing you can have when networking.

Stay positive. I promise you'll attract the right people. Photo by photostock.

I was not an outgoing teenager. As the typical introvert I am, I carried a book everywhere I went, read at lunch and didn’t seek out much social interaction beyond a close circle of friends. One day, however, I noticed that some people at school seemed to be friends with everyone, and walked down the hallway saying “Hi! How are you?” left and right.

So I asked my mom, from her pinnacle of wisdom why this was. Why did some girls come off as so nice, while I barely said “Hi” to anyone in the hallways? And she told me something I’ve never forgotten.

“Well,” she told me, “you could smile a bit more.”

Of course, this simple bit of advice was just the kernel of a bigger, life-changing idea, which is incredibly important in networking. It’s just this: You have to have a positive attitude.

Being surly or pessimistic or just plain blank isn’t going to get you anywhere in networking. People don’t want to hang around with depressing people. My fiance clearly categorizes people into “happy people” and “exhausting people.” The difference here is exceedingly clear. Those of us who view the world in a negative way are exhausting to be around, and people do not want to be exhausting.

The way to go about attracting people to you (because isn’t it so much nicer when people come to you rather than you having to seek them out?) is to be positive and happy. You have to be fun and comfortable to be around. You have to put people at ease, and make them feel better about themselves and about the world around them. And the best way to do that is to have a positive attitude.

Smile at people. Look for the silver lining. Be optimistic and expect the best. That’s the simplest and easiest way to attract people. They’ll want to be around you because the feel good when they’re around you.

All you have to do is cultivate a positive attitude, and the rest will follow.
